Yuma's Agricultural Sector: A $4.4 Billion Powerhouse Driving Arizona's Economy

Yuma County’s agricultural sector drives Arizona’s economy, contributing an impressive $4.4 billion in 2022, with $3.9 billion generated locally.

Known as the “Winter Lettuce Capital of the World,” Yuma supplies over 90% of America’s leafy greens each winter, reaching a retail value of $3.2 billion and ranking third nationally in vegetable sales.

Efficient water use sets Yuma apart—less than one acre-foot is used for every $1,000 of vegetables sold, far below the Colorado Basin’s average.

This efficiency reflects Yuma’s focus on sustainable farming, vital in an arid climate where water is scarce.

The industry provides over 12,000 local jobs and $530 million in wages, amounting to more than 20% of county employment in 2022.

Yet, a persistent labor shortage has led to greater agricultural imports.

To tackle this, the University of Arizona Yuma and partners secured a $9.5 million USDA grant to develop a diverse, skilled workforce for the future.

FERC Initiates Pre-Filing Review for Yuma Pipeline Project

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has approved LED Enterprises, LLC to begin the Pre-Filing Environmental Review Process for the proposed Yuma Pipeline Project in Arizona.

This move encourages early engagement with local stakeholders, aiming to address environmental impacts before a formal application is submitted.

The project plans to build a 140-mile, 30-inch-diameter natural gas pipeline through Maricopa and Yuma counties, transporting up to 800 million cubic feet of gas per day.

The pipeline will link an El Paso Natural Gas Company line to the U.S.-Mexico border near San Luis, providing energy for northwest Mexico and supporting Arizona’s growing power needs.

Open house meetings on June 10 in Buckeye and June 11 in Yuma offer residents a chance to learn more, connect directly with the project team, and voice their concerns.

Community feedback remains vital as planning and review continue.

Yuma's Youth Unveil Vibrant Mural at Kennedy Skate Park

Yuma’s Kennedy Skate Park has unveiled a colorful new mural, “Toony High Jinks,” created by local students in partnership with Arizona@Work.

The mural features lively, comic-inspired cartoon characters and skateboarding motifs that capture the vibrant spirit of the park.

This community-driven project is part of Yuma’s longstanding summer mural program, which has helped produce nearly 30 public artworks citywide over the past 28 years.

Participants, often new to art, received two weeks of foundational training before painting the mural, guided by instructor Lisseth Carrillo and assistant Sariah Garcia.

Youth artists like Jesus De Loa and Orlando Gutierrez contributed to the design and painting.

The public is invited to the unveiling ceremony on Wednesday, July 30, at 10 a.m. at Kennedy Skate Park, 24th Street and Kennedy Lane.

Visitors can also enjoy the park’s upgraded amenities, renovated through community support and federal grants.
